The Isle of Yarn
The Isle of Yarn is about a society of women who live in harmony with one another and with nature. However, the isle is at risk due to enemy invaders who are hunting the rabbits to sell their pelts.
Triptych One: The Isle
The first part of my thesis is about a fictional community of women
who have a special bond with magical rabbits. It focuses on craft-making,
community between women, as well as the process of making and unmaking.
1. Unraveling
The ritual of unmaking.
2. The Cradle
The process of making something from start to finish:
harvesting, spinning wool into yarn, and creating a knit piece.
There is order and harmony on the Isle.
3. Communion
The restoration and vulnerability of deep, meaningful
connections. I was inspired by my mother’s stories about
Dongbei bath houses.
Triptych Two: The Enemy
The second part of my thesis is about an outside enemy force coming to
hunt
and kill the rabbits to sell their fur for a profit. It explores themes of capitalism
and colonialism, as well as resource use and abuse of the environment.

4. Transgression
The introduction of the enemies. The concept
of the enemy was inspired partially by colonialism,
and their armor references conquistador armor.
5. Grave
The processing of the rabbit pelts and the disposal
of the bodies. A violent, chaotic, and wasteful use of resources.
6. Tempest
The demise of the enemy. They have disrupted
the natural balance by hunting the rabbits, but nature
is ultimately their downfall. Inspired by climate change.
Process
Below is the process of “Unraveling.” These images show the inital sketches,
the separate assets used to collage the final pieces, the piece in different
stages, the physical processes layered into the digital processes.
